Homemade Flour Tortillas

2012-03-04_12-04-05_833These are so easy to make! Once you’ve tried this recipe you will never buy a premade flour tortilla again!!
I make these tortillas at least once a week and needless to say I have gotten really good at making them. The secret is to try and make them as thin as possible. That way they will need less time to cook and therefore they will remain soft and flexible.

Ingredients:
  • 3 cups all purpose flour (or wheat flour)
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 6 tbsp vegetable oil

Preparation:

The thinnest you make them the better ;)

Directions:
  1. Mix the flour, baking powder and salt. Add the oil and work it into the flour with your fingers until fully incorporated.
  2. Add the water a little at a time until obtaining a smooth dough.
  3. Shape the dough into small balls; the smaller the balls, the thinner your tortillas will be.
  4. Let the balls of dough rest for 15 minutes before rolling them and cooking them one at a time for a couple minutes (or less depending on how thin you make them) on a medium/ high heated pan.

Enjoy!!

  1. Why do your tortilla pictures look so different? In one, the tortillas look homemade and thick. The other picture, the tortillas look very uniform and paper thin and more white.

    1. I have recorded the video of how to make flour tortillas a year ago. Since then, I have gotten a lot better at making them. It is the same recipe I have just learned to make them a lot thinner which means they only need a few seconds to cook through (that's the reason why they're white). I hope that helps!

  2. Could you also include written instructions for the recipes on your site, please?

    1. I have just updated the post with instructions! Also this is not the original post for the video. The original post would be this one http://gettingmysexybodyback.blogspot.com/2011/06/flour-tortillas.html

      Thanks <3

  3. So you're saying you didn't change flours or anything? It's just rolling them out more that changes the color? Mine look like yours in the video. But since I am gluten intolerant I had to tweak the recipe. I use Bob's Red Mill Gluten-Free All-Purpose flour mix and add 3tsp. Xanthan Gum. They turn out just wonderfully, very soft and pliable, very unlike anything gluten-free you would find online or in a health store. Most of the time recipes you find already gluten-free stray too far from what the original wheat product is supposed to be like. So I have more success taking regular recipes and tweaking them gluten-free. So for the tortillas I was really looking for Authentic not an Americanized version. Thank you so much for the video and the recipe! Simply awesome! Muchas Gracias!
