French Bread made easy, no tricks, no special equipment needed...
Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 tbsp dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 egg yolk + 1 tbsp water
Directions:

    baguette2
  1. Mix the flour, salt, sugar and dry yeast together.
  2. Gradually add the warm water to the dry ingredient.
  3. Knead the dough for 8-10 minutes until soft and elastic (add a few drops of water if needed while kneading).
  4. Let rise for 40-60 minutes or until the dough doubles in size.
  5. To shape the baguettes, divide the dough in half and each half into a rectangle. Roll the rectangle on itself starting from the longer edge. Pinch the dough on the edges to seal. Cut 3 or 4 times the baguettes with a sharp knife.
  6. Let rise 20-30 minutes.
  7. Beat the egg yolk and tablespoon of water and brush the baguettes with it.
  8. Bake at 350F for 20 minutes.

  7. This is my first time making bread and all I can say is its awesome! I can imagine all other ingredients I can add to this recipe. I thank you for the ease of cooking fresh French bread! I have to admit I saw a lot of recipes call for a little steam, I added about a cup of water in a pie pan at the bottom and it was delicious! Thanks again, Jay!

  14. What did you bake the bread in? I can see it looks like a broiling pan, but did you bake it on baking parchment? What does one use if there's no parchment available? Do I grease a cookie sheet? Just wondering (because I have your dough recipe right now in the process of rising and would like to know). Thanks!

  15. I would love to try this recipe but what kind of yeast did you use? Active dry or rapid rise/instant yeast?
